“In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
(Proverbs 3:6)
⠀⠀
Have you ever asked yourself questions like, “what is God’s will for my life? What does God want me to do next?”
⠀⠀
Let’s be real here. Life would be so much easier if we could just hear the audible voice of God every time we were faced with a major decision. In fact, even in the small, day-to-day things, it would be nice to have a confident feeling of “this is the the path God wants me to take.”
⠀⠀
But feelings are notoriously deceptive. I’ve often heard people equate a sense of peace to the guidance of God, but in reality, it doesn’t always work that way!
⠀⠀
I have made several large decisions in my life, at the leading of God’s direction, that have NOT been accompanied by a sense of peace at all. Rather, I have felt fear, insecurity, or worry, because God has asked me to step into the unknown!
⠀⠀
And let’s not forget how Jesus felt in the garden on the night before he died. His soul was “overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death” (Mark 14:34). And yet he knew he was about to fulfill the greatest of all God’s plans.
⠀⠀
So we cannot solely rely on a “sense of peace” to direct our steps.
⠀⠀
But then what can we rely on? How else can we know that we are on the right track, and not straying from the will of our Heavenly Father?
⠀⠀
God makes it surprisingly simple. He says, “get to know me. Walk with me. Spend time with me. Acknowledge me in all your ways—in other words, let me be a part of your everyday life—and I will make sure your path leads you where I want you to go.”
⠀⠀
I’m not saying that this is 𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘺 to do, but it is 𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦.
⠀⠀
It is simple because it doesn’t require us to check off a whole bunch of boxes, hear the audible voice of God, or experience some magical sense of peace before moving forward.
⠀⠀
It simply means living in a genuine relationship with a God who see us, loves us, and knows us. It means choosing to trust, even when we can’t see or understand what should come next.
⠀⠀
As we do this, and as we faithfully put one foot in front of the other, I believe he guides our lives. He directs our steps.
⠀⠀
He makes our paths straight.
